The itinerary that was made for us to include all of the areas that we wanted to visit was excellent, you did a great job in fitting a lot into a 3 week period....... There was no one stand out highlight of our trip as we enjoyed every place we visited and they were all individually exciting and quite different. If we had to pick one it would be a toss up between Easter Island and Machu Picchu. Thank you for all of the organization that went into our trip, we did not have to worry about any aspect other than to turn up at the allotted time and someone would look after every detail for us.
Many Thanks
WET SEASON = SUMMER (January through March)
During the summer rains many parts of the Pantanal are flooded fairly deeply. The fauna and flora are abuandant and the Pantanal is alive but travel is difficult. The main features of this season are the beautiful water filled landscapes with its many water birds such as the Jabiru Stork, Woodstorks, Limpkins, Ducks, Teals and Egrets. Among the common mammals able to be seen are Capybaras, Crab-eating Foxes, and the Grey-Brocket and Pampas deer. The water plants are in full bloom with many different forms and colors throughout the many lakes and rivers. There are many butterflies and other interesting insects. The wet season is also the best time to watch the most beautiful sunset of the year.
Wear light clothing, bring two pairs of shoes (tennis shoes, boots or hiking shoes), jeans, light long sleeve shirts, swimming costume, hat, bring rolls of film, insect repellent, binoculars, light raincoat and flashlight, sun cream, sunglasses.
INTERMEDIATE SEASON (April through June)
In April the rains stop and water levels begin to drop, forming lagoons. Here in these bodies of water, thousands of fish are trapped, providing a food source for the large nubers of water birds which then congregate. The temperature becomes more comfortable and the night skies are filled with stars. Mammals, who moved away in the wet season, start to come back and are more easily spotted. Species such as the White-lipped Peccaries, Collared Peccaries, Marsh Deer and the Howler and Capuchin Monkeys can also often be seen.
DRY SEASON = WINTER (July through October)
This is the best time to observe wildlife. The low levels of rain means that lagoons dry out more aiding transportation and wildlife is more exposed. The fields begin to dry, opening large grazing areas where mammals search for food and water in the remaining water puddles. From August the Tabebuia trees start to blossom with their pink flowers) and Paratudos (yellow flowers). This is also the main breeding season for birds, their calls can be heard throughout the Pantanal. This is also the best season to observe Giant Anteaters, Crab-eating Racoons and South-American Coatis.
RAINY SEASON = (November through December)
This is period when there is a lot of rain in the Pantanal, but not enough to cause serious flooding. Due to the long dry season, it takes a while for the soil to saturate to the point of flooding. It is also a season for a great abundance of food sources for birds who will have started their breeding in the past months. It is very common to see new-born chicks being fed by their parents at this time.
TEMPERATURE: The summer is hot, with temperatures between 25ºC (77ºF) and 40ºC (104ºF). During the winter the weather is mild and dry, with temperature varying between 18ºC (64ºF) and 30ºC (86ºF). The occasional cold front can bring temperatures down as low as 8ºC (46ºF) so, if you plan visit the Pantanal from June to August it is important to be prepared for these unpredictable cold fronts.
